Economic Performance of Different Cement Production Routes

Scenario-specific analysis:

The interactive Pareto chart below compares different decarbonization pathways for cement production. Click below to get details about the different decarbonization pathways.

The environmental and economic performance of each pathway can be personalized to user-defined scenarios, allowing to explore how changes in commodity prices and emission intensities affect the results.

How to interpret the graph

Each point represents a unique combination of base fuel technology and CO₂ capture option, evaluated for cost, emissions, and energy consumption.

  • X-axis: Total production cost (€/t of clinker)
  • Y-axis: CO₂ emissions (t CO₂/t of clinker)
  • Color scale: Specific energy consumption (GJ/t of clinker) — from low (blue) to high (orange)
  • Shape: Represents the base fuel technology used in the kiln (e.g., coal, biomass, hydrogen, etc.)
  • Pattern/Fill: Represents the carbon capture type, such as:
    • Solid fill: No capture
    • Striped: MEA capture (CC_MEA)
    • Cross-hatched: Oxyfuel combustion (OxyCC)
    • Dotted: Calcium looping (CaL)
    • Square pattern: Electrified MEA with heat pumps (CC_MEA_HPs)

Hover on the markers in the plot to view the cost, emissions, and energy consumption of the corresponding configuration. Use the options panel on the side to select/deselect individual configurations.

Adjust the energy consumption range to specifically highlight options with low/high energy consumptions.

Create your own scenarios

Create custom energy and emissions scenarios by adjusting the parameters in the left-hand panel. Three predefined scenarios are available:

  • Fossil scenario (Scn fossil): represents the current European energy mix
  • RE1 scenario (Scn RE1): represents the 2040 European energy mix
  • RE2 scenario (Scn RE2): represents the 2050 European energy mix
