Economic Performance of Different Instant Coffee Production Routes

Scenario-specific analysis:

The interactive graph below illustrates total CO₂ emissions and specific total cost across different decarbonization pathways for the instant coffee (IC) sector. Click below to get details about the different decarbonization pathways.

The environmental and economic performance of each pathway can be personalized to user-defined scenarios, allowing to explore how changes in commodity prices and emission intensities affect the results.

How to interpret the graph

The alternative configurations are differentiated by:

  • Color: represents the energy vector used for heat supply (e.g., natural gas, biomethane, hydrogen, etc.)
  • Shape: represents the roasting technology:
    •  Circle = batch roasting
    • Diamond = continuous roasting
  • Filling: represents the implementation of a CO₂ capture unit:
    •  Filled = no CO₂ capture
    • Hollow = CO₂ capture implemented

Customize the scenarios

You can adjust the assumptions used to evaluate the different decarbonization pathways:

  • Enter the CO₂ emission intensity for each energy source below to account for indirect emissions (i.e., emissions from energy production and procurement). Set all values to 0 if only direct (scope 1) emissions should be displayed.
  • Enter the desired energy and CO₂ prices to estimate the corresponding specific total cost.

Click Update to refresh the graph based on your inputs. To return to default values, use the Reset button.

User-defined parameters: emission factors (EF) and commodities prices (p)

The following abbreviations are used: NG = natural gas, H2 = hydrogen, EL = electricity, BC = biomethane, BM = biomass, GCB = green coffee beans, ETS = CO₂ EU ETS, TS = CO₂ transport and storage.

Check that all parameter values are valid.

Economic assessment across Europe:

This analysis evaluates the economic performance of different decarbonization pathways for the IC sector across Europe, considering country-specific energy prices (2025). By comparing fuel switching, electrification, and CO₂ capture options, the assessment identifies how economic conditions influence the prioritization of decarbonization pathways and whether common trends emerge across European countries.

Explore the maps:

The specific total cost (STC, €/t IC) for each decarbonization pathway is calculated for each country and represented using a unified color scale, ranging from black (lower STC) to purple (higher STC). This allows the STC values of each pathway to be compared consistently across countries. Hover over a country to view the associated STC and energy prices, including the electricity price (pE), natural gas price (pNG), biomass price (pBM), biomethane price (pBioCH4), and green hydrogen price (pH2). Use the mouse to zoom in and explore specific regions, and click Reset to return to the initial map view.
